Pet theft is unfortunately on the increase so it is very important to make sure your pet is microchipped so it can be traced back to you. 

Every week more than 60 dogs are stolen in England and Wales.

With the law as it stands there is no deterrent to reduce pet theft, there are ongoing attempts to change this with a Pet Theft Bill going to be debated in Parliament.

The stats 

  • 52% of dogs are stolen from the garden
  • 19% of dogs stolen from House burglaries 
  • 16% of dogs stolen on walks
  • 8% of dogs stolen outside of shops
  • 5% of dogs stolen from cars

Theft prevention tips 

  • Don’t leave your dog tied up outside of shops.
  • Don’t let your dog out of your sight on a walk.
  • Don’t leave dogs unattended in cars.
  • Make sure garden, house and kennels are secure.
  • Check gates and lighting
  • Be careful who sees your pet photos on social media.
  • Regularly change your routine.

  • Makes sure you have these details saved on your mobile phone. 
  • Clear photo of your pet showing distinguishing features.
  • Pets microchip number
  • Local dog wardens number
  • Vets number
  • Pet microchip database number so you can report it
  • Details are up to date and correct with your microchip
  • Make sure your pets details cannot be changed without your permission
