Avian Influenza (Bird Flu ) Policy
High levels of death and disease from Avian Influenza has been seen around the UK in sea birds (especially gulls) but also in common species locally such as crows.
Currently the advice to the public is to:
DO NOT pick up any sick / dead birds.
There is a risk to human health and of transferring/ spreading the disease.
Members of the public can contact APHA on 03459 33 55 77 or
Natural Resource Wales on 0300 065 3000.
About any sick or dead birds.
This is a notifiable disease and they should NOT be brought to practice.
Because of this we are no longer able to ADMIT ANY WILD BIRD into the premises.
Any bird handled for euthanasia must be done outside and protective clothing and mask.
Members of the public should be advised that the only thing we can do is to euthanise any wild birds presented to us and that they should not expect any treatment.
If the bird appears healthy then the client should be advised to leave them alone and not touch them, they can rest and hopefully fly off in their own time.
We will no longer be able to ‘collect’ Shearwaters when autumn comes. We will await further clarification from the government as to the Shearwater policy and refer the public to the local volunteers when time comes.
